‘Speak into the anxieties of our present world’
Here’s David’s deeply felt and deeply thought prayer in reflection on the passages we thought about at yesterday’s service. (Jonah 4 and Matthew 20:1-16) Copyright free image from Pexels via Pixabay.
Father, thank you. Thank you for confronting us this morning with your strange and scandalous grace.
Thank you for reminding us that in your kingdom, love is not a transaction, mercy is not a scarce commodity, and your generosity doesn’t run on our balance sheets. You don’t pay us according to what we think we’ve earned; you give us what we need out of the abundance of who You are.
Yet Lord, we confess how deeply your grace unsettles us. Like Jonah angry that you showed mercy to Nineveh, or the vineyard labourers grumbling when the latecomers received the same pay, we easily become resentful when grace doesn’t feel fair. Forgive our scorekeeping – wanting grace for ourselves, but strict fairness for everyone else.
Holy Spirit, speak into the anxieties of our present world. In a world of artificial intelligence, automated systems, robotic warehouses and impersonal call centres, human worth is measured by speed and output. We confess how easily human beings are treated as disposable commodities.
We see the powerful amassing more power, while the fragile, the exhausted, those who struggle to keep pace with change, and the overlooked are pushed ever further to the margins.
Father, what kind of world do we truly want to see? Teach us to desire and contend for the world you desire:
- A world where human dignity is never traded away for efficiency;
- A world where every person – no matter when they arrive, no matter what they produce or achieve – is cherished as a bearer of your image;
- A world where technology and innovation serve the common good rather than enriching the few at the expense of the many.
Grant us the moral courage to make ethical choices that shape this alternative world. In our resources, our conversations, and our civic life, give us the backbone to resist winner-take-all cruelty.
Lord, we bring before you the world’s modern “Ninevehs” – the empires, the boardrooms, and the military regimes where power has grown arrogant and human life is counted cheap.
We weep with Christ over the rubble of Ukraine, the shattered streets of Gaza, and the forgotten starvation in Sudan. Soften the hearts of aggressors and autocrats who believe they are untouchable.
And we pray into the international tensions due to trade disputes, tariffs, and inequities. Speak into the corridors of technological and financial power, that those who design our future might be humbled by a vision of justice, restraint, and the common good.
We pray for our own congregation and community here in Hilton and across Inverness. For households buckling under the weight of rising energy costs and precarious work; for young people anxious about their future in an automated society; for the elderly and vulnerable who fear being left behind.
Make our church an authentic outpost of your Kingdom – a sanctuary where performance metrics hold no sway, where the last are welcomed as first, and where nobody has to earn the right to be loved.
We thank you that our Lord Jesus Christ bore the true heat of the day upon the cross, taking our poverty so that we might receive the unsearchable riches of your grace. In him, grant us the deep freedom of those who have nothing left to prove, and quiet our striving in the assurance of your love.
Send us out from here in the Spirit, not to join the scramble to get ahead, but to live as ambassadors of your subversive generosity.
Make us brave. Make us free. Make us extravagant with the grace we have so freely received.
