Bob and Margaret at Sounds Familiar

Last Sunday, Audrey Whyte chatted to Duncan about Sounds Familiar, the singing group for people with dementia and their carers which meets in the church twice a month. Here’s a lovely poem about the group from Margaret Johnston. She tells me that Bob absolutely loved Sounds Familiar.

Sounds Familiar

Two tuesdays in every month are the days to look forward to,
a special mark on the calendar a very special thing to do.

A cheery hello from the wonderful “girls” all smiles as we appear
they make us feel so wanted a welcome so sincere.

The band strikes up and the faces change and you can clearly see
the memories these songs bring back a precious memory key.

They unlock a time , a happy time when they were young and free
a lovely dance with a beautiful girl these times – so very dear.

As a carer , oh my heart just swells when my hubby held my hand
when they play a song so dear to us a memory only we understand.

To hear him sing out every word and join in every song
when most of the time he can’t remember where he is, what life is , what is so very wrong.

Dear Audrey is our leader ,she makes us laugh so much
with action songs and silliness she weaves her magical touch.

So please don’t ever think to stop these most important days
It’s times when they are taken back and lights their lives like rainbow rays.
