‘I’m fine’

‘I’m fine’
(A very moving poem from someone who has been recently bereaved)
When people ask ‘How are you?’
I usually say ‘I’m fine.
Good days bad days, you know
my life’s changing all the time.’
But really when I try to think
Just what and how I feel,
I honestly can’t tell you,
For it all seems so unreal.
I’m still on auto pilot
going from day-to-day
functioning as normal
but nothing is the same.
There’s an empty chair at the table
and now the setting is for one
I find it hard to sit there
and accept what my life’s become.
But then I hear you saying
‘Now come on! That’s just not right.
Your life was made for living.
You must not give up the fight.’
Just think about the laughs we shared,
the years we had together.
God blessed us with such endless love
and that will last forever.
And so I must keep going,
make a new life from the old.
You’re always with me in my heart.
Memories more precious than gold.
