Looking back/Looking Forward – Rhymes Recollected

by | Jan 11, 2021 | Events

Join Audrey and John for the first Rhymes Recollected Online in 2021. Monday 11th January at 2pm.  The theme will be ‘Looking back/looking forward.’  Audrey and John will be sharing poems familiar and less familiar – please get in touch to let us know what poems you’d like us to read.  Poems you remember from childhood, poems you have written, poems which have been particularly meaningful to you over the last 12 months, poems you just want to hear again!

You can catch up here, or by following the link below.  Also below is a link to Scottish Makar Jackie Kay’s three-part poem Fare Well – Edinburgh’s Hogmanay 2020.

Here’s  a link to one of the songs Audrey mentioned with reference to Robert Macfarlane and Jackie Morris’s book The Lost Words spells.

This song, The Lost Words Blessing was written in Scottish Gaelic folkloric form by a group of European musicians – Julie Fowlis, Karine Polwart, Seckou Keita, Kris Drever, Rachel Newton, Beth Porter, Jim Molyneux, Kerry Andrew. The form is inspired by blessings in Scottish Gaelic, particularly from a beautiful collection of charms and incantations called Carmina Gadelica. It is offered both in hope and light, and in grief for the losses yet to come.  You can find out more about the project here.
